FRAGMENTS

The Dialectical Computer series is a collaboration with Dr Alex Blanchard. In this project, the respective practices collide with intentional roughness, creating tensions for the emergence of a symbiotic dialogue.

Through this process, a series of explicit geometric fragments emerged, translating the signs and symbols of the script into a space of tectonic projection. At times, such as the dotted lines, the translations are visual mappings of temporal transitions and spatial rotations. Others, such as the more recognisable structural elements, are mappings of spatial sound rhythms. Whatever the case may be, Survey raises the question whether the ‘Pataphysical practices' resistance in using an external existing condition as a compositional and ocular catalyst is of any relevance. For instance, contrary to the desire for 'pure' invention is the inconvenient reality that many drawings produced up to this point, such as LOCUS, Trip, Chimney, Map, and Plan, all start with external elements to inform and trigger the resulting configurations. A starting point may be a reflection on human regret, or perhaps it be a formal element taken from an external condition; their presence does not limit the practice but helps it emerge. In the ‘Pataphysical practice, these things do not become oracles or blueprints, but are tools when and if needed, open for free (mis)interpretation. In The Dialectical Computer study, the notion of external input is the central component for the ‘Pataphysical moment. Consequently, the translation process during the making of Survey confronts the previous desire to invent without an external compositional informer, and is (mis)directed and (mis)guided by the interpretations offered by the external script.
