Survey

Survey is the first drawing produced within the ’Pataphysical framework of The Dialectical Computer. The drawing emerges from a specific site: the ceiling of a gallery space at Newcastle University. Through acts of recording - measuring, listening, photographing, and filming - the space was translated into a layered script developed by Dr Alex Blanchard. From this script, drawn translation was produced.

In the resultant drawing, signs and symbols are reinterpreted as geometric fragments, where marks register shifts in time, movement, and rhythm rather than fixed meaning. The work does not seek to represent an irrelevant original content, but to translate it into a projective configuration.

Survey challenges the idea of surveying as something purely rational. External material becomes a catalyst rather than a constraint, and is something to be misread, reworked, and reimagined.
